গাছ থেকে কাগজ, কিন্তু কীভাবে?
আপনি কি কখনো ভেবেছেন, প্রতিদিন যে কাগজে আমরা লিখি, বই পড়ি বা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নথি তৈরি করি, সেই সাধারণ কাগজটি একসময় ছিল একটি জীবন্ত গাছ? একটি সবুজ বন থেকে শুরু হয়ে অত্যাধুনিক কারখানার ভেতর দিয়ে অসংখ্য ধাপ অতিক্রম করে কীভাবে একটি গাছ রূপ নেয় সাদা, মসৃণ কাগজে—আজ আমরা সেই অবিশ্বাস্য যাত্রার প্রতিটি ধাপ দেখব। সবকিছুর শুরু হয় সুপরিকল্পিত বন ব্যবস্থাপনা থেকে। কাগজ তৈরির জন্য সাধারণত দ্রুত বেড়ে ওঠা গাছ, যেমন পাইন, স্প্রুস, ইউক্যালিপটাস কিংবা অ্যাকেশিয়া ব্যবহার করা হয়।
আধুনিক বন ব্যবস্থাপনায় একটি গাছ কাটার পর তার পরিবর্তে নতুন চারা রোপণ করা হয়, যাতে বন তার ভারসাম্য বজায় রাখতে পারে। বিশাল হারভেস্টার মেশিন কয়েক সেকেন্ডের মধ্যেই একটি বড় গাছ কেটে ফেলে, ডালপালা সরিয়ে গাছের কাণ্ড সংগ্রহ করে। এরপর সেই কাণ্ড ট্রাকে করে বিশাল কাগজ কারখানায় নিয়ে যাওয়া হয়। কারখানায় পৌঁছানোর পর প্রথমেই গাছের মোটা বাকল খুলে ফেলা হয়। কারণ বাকলে এমন অনেক উপাদান থাকে যা ভালো মানের কাগজ তৈরিতে বাধা সৃষ্টি করতে পারে। বিশাল ডিবার্কিং মেশিন ঘূর্ণনের মাধ্যমে কয়েক মিনিটেই পুরো গাছের বাকল আলাদা করে দেয়। এরপর পরিষ্কার কাঠের গুঁড়িগুলো প্রবেশ করে শক্তিশালী উড চিপারে, যেখানে ধারালো ব্লেড সেগুলোকে সমান আকারের ছোট ছোট কাঠের টুকরোতে পরিণত করে। এবার শুরু হয় সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ধাপ। কাঠের এই টুকরোগুলো বিশাল ডাইজেস্টার ট্যাঙ্কে প্রবেশ করে। সেখানে উচ্চ তাপমাত্রা, প্রচণ্ড চাপ এবং বিশেষ রাসায়নিকের সাহায্যে কাঠের ভেতরের লিগনিন ভেঙে ফেলা হয়। লিগনিন হলো সেই প্রাকৃতিক আঠা যা কাঠের তন্তুগুলোকে শক্তভাবে ধরে রাখে। এটি আলাদা হয়ে গেলে শুধু সূক্ষ্ম সেলুলোজ ফাইবার বা পাল্প অবশিষ্ট থাকে। এই সেলুলোজই ভবিষ্যতের কাগজের মূল উপাদান। তবে এই পাল্প তখনও বাদামি রঙের থাকে। তাই এটিকে বহু ধাপে ধুয়ে পরিষ্কার করা হয় এবং পরিবেশবান্ধব ব্লিচিং প্রযুক্তির মাধ্যমে ধীরে ধীরে সাদা করা হয়। প্রতিটি ধাপে কম্পিউটার নিয়ন্ত্রিত যন্ত্র ফাইবারের গুণমান পরীক্ষা করে, যাতে শেষ পর্যন্ত তৈরি হওয়া কাগজ হয় সমান, মসৃণ এবং শক্তিশালী। এরপর পাল্পের সঙ্গে প্রচুর পরিমাণ বিশুদ্ধ পানি মিশিয়ে একটি পাতলা মিশ্রণ তৈরি করা হয়। এই মিশ্রণ দ্রুতগতির পেপার মেশিনের চলমান তারের জালের ওপর ছড়িয়ে দেওয়া হয়। পানি নিচে নেমে যায়, আর সূক্ষ্ম সেলুলোজ ফাইবার একে অপরের সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে একটি অবিচ্ছিন্ন পাতলা কাগজের স্তর তৈরি করতে শুরু করে। এরপর কাগজটি একের পর এক বিশাল প্রেস রোলারের মধ্য দিয়ে যায়। রোলারগুলো চাপ দিয়ে অতিরিক্ত পানি বের করে দেয় এবং কাগজকে আরও শক্ত করে তোলে। এরপর কাগজ প্রবেশ করে শত শত ডিগ্রি তাপমাত্রার গরম ড্রায়ার সিলিন্ডারের ভেতর। এখানে ধীরে ধীরে অবশিষ্ট আর্দ্রতা দূর হয়ে যায়। এরপর পালিশিং রোলারের মাধ্যমে কাগজের পৃষ্ঠকে আরও মসৃণ ও চকচকে করা হয়। কোনো কাগজে বিশেষ কোটিং যোগ করা হয়, যাতে সেটি ম্যাগাজিন, ছবি বা উচ্চমানের প্রিন্টিংয়ের জন্য উপযুক্ত হয়। আবার কোনো কাগজ সাধারণ লেখালেখি বা বই ছাপানোর জন্য প্রস্তুত করা হয়। সবশেষে বিশাল রোল আকারে তৈরি হওয়া কাগজকে অত্যন্ত নিখুঁত কাটিং মেশিনে বিভিন্ন আকারে কেটে ফেলা হয়। A4 অফিস পেপার, সংবাদপত্র, বইয়ের কাগজ, কার্ডবোর্ড কিংবা প্যাকেজিং বোর্ড—সবই একই মূল প্রক্রিয়া থেকে তৈরি হয়। প্রতিটি শিটে স্বয়ংক্রিয় সেন্সর ক্ষুদ্রতম ত্রুটিও শনাক্ত করে, যাতে বাজারে পৌঁছায় শুধু সর্বোচ্চ মানের কাগজ। আজ পৃথিবীর অনেক কাগজ কারখানায় পুনর্ব্যবহারযোগ্য কাগজ থেকেও নতুন কাগজ তৈরি করা হয়। ব্যবহৃত কাগজ সংগ্রহ করে বিশেষ প্রক্রিয়ায় কালি ও অন্যান্য উপাদান আলাদা করা হয়, তারপর সেই ফাইবার আবার নতুন কাগজে রূপ নেয়। এর ফলে নতুন গাছ কাটার প্রয়োজন কমে, বন রক্ষা পায় এবং পরিবেশের ওপর চাপও অনেক কমে যায়। একটি সাধারণ কাগজের পেছনে লুকিয়ে আছে প্রকৃতি, বিজ্ঞান, প্রকৌশল এবং হাজারো মানুষের পরিশ্রম। আমরা প্রতিদিন যে কাগজ ব্যবহার করি, সেটি শুধু একটি সাদা শিট নয়; এটি একটি দীর্ঘ যাত্রার শেষ অধ্যায়। তাই অপ্রয়োজনীয় কাগজ নষ্ট না করে যতটা সম্ভব পুনর্ব্যবহার করুন। একটি কাগজ বাঁচানো মানে ভবিষ্যতের জন্য একটি সবুজ পৃথিবীকে আরও একটু নিরাপদ রাখা।
